#6. Food For Thought

Sometimes when one sits down at the end of a long and weary day and goes through the events that happened in one’s mind, thoughts come gushing and flow through the brain,

touching every nook and cranny hitherto untouched. Similar is the situation one goes through when one is on a much-needed vacation, probably swinging in a hammock, facing a mild-mannered sun, playing hide-n-seek with the clouds, with the cool sea breeze leaving soft kisses over your body – what do you think of as you drift off into a state of sub-consciousness?

All the things you have done, all the problems you have faced, all the good and bad things that happened to you, come flooding your mind and clogging that small little 2 pound mass of flesh and blood nestling above your neck and inside your head called the brain. You are awake but yet you are asleep. You can comprehend what is around you but you are lost in that momentary semi-real flashback, which is passing through your head. It is at such moments that little wisps of inspiration strike you. You suddenly become able to figure out a simple solution to some problem which has been ageing with you. It is these moments, your very own personal ‘Eureka’ moments, that make the difference, that shows you the way to go.

But then one wonders, are these solutions really practicable? Do they really work if implemented? To each his own, some might work for someone, while they might not for others. Some may lose the thought flow, the moment one awakens to the real world surrounding him when a teeny-weeny little mosquito rocks the loins and with it, the hammock. The solution gets wiped out faster than it had come and does not leave behind even the faintest of recollections as to its whereabouts.

While writing this, I am trying to understand and I wonder, is it me only who suffers from these bouts of solace, or are there many like me, who gets these hits of wisdom when they are lost in the recesses of their own minds? Human tendencies never cease to wonder. The mind is capable of absolutely the impossible. What with the invention of the wheel to the nuclear bomb, all these are products of the human mind. Those gently, ticking left and right hemispheres or lobes or by whatever name you may wish to call them, that is the centre of all creation possible at the hands of human beings. Our very own super-computer, whose depths have been so far unchallenged and un-scaled.

Yet our quest goes on, the quest for even bigger, better, larger, faster. Our mind keeps working like a free-wheeling bird, here – there, everywhere. Our thoughts begin somewhere and end up somewhere else, like this piece I am writing. I sat down to write thinking of something else, and through my progression in the lines, I have reached someplace else. That is the magic of our imagination and our thoughts. They are like Alice in her wonderland, don’t know where they lead you next and what you think and encounter next. It is easy to go and on about this beautiful anatomical model designed by God, which is hidden from view, but which is the controller behind this body-shaped spaceship we call the human form. But then I wonder, would I be adding something new to the existing body of knowledge? Or would I be unnecessarily talking about something, which has been talked about for centuries, since the advent of mankind, and which has been praised and appraised no end?

I feel the answer lies with the latter of the two. But then the mind does not stop to comprehend these ironies of repetition, its job is to think and keep on churning out fodder for thought and passing the same to the thinking apparatus up there, to be delivered to the spot, where it can be felt by the person thinking – me. So in this maze of free-wheeling ideas and more ideas, one is compelled to chain down the over-exertion of the brain engine, down to a manageable level, where only that much is produced, which is required. But do not be under the impression that Mr Brain will listen to your arguments and instructions, coz brain hath no father. The ideas will be sprung and distributed, but they will be stored in confinement, waiting for the optimum time to be released.

Our dreams are evidence of the fertility of our brain. Often translating our day’s events coupled with significant memories, into a full length 70mm feature film, linking everything possible, into one whole length of flashy celluloid, with no advertisements to bother your viewing pleasure. How often have you felt that that particular dream was exactly the same as what is happening now with you? How often have you felt that the vision in your dream showed you more on something than you had ever known before? The concept of De Ja Vu – or been there, done that, is all too popular. From where does one get this extrasensory perception of events or things, before they actually occur? The realm of telepathic communication is much awaited, but yet to take shape, although impersonators do exist, proclaiming such powers. But it is yet to be tried and tested. Is such a thing possible? Can man communicate with his brains without using oral or written accessories? Seems hard to believe, but then, when Socrates pleaded that the earth was round, he met the same fate.

The age of telepathic communication will usher in a new era for mankind, upgrading the role of our very own super-computer, to an even higher pedestal. We already know that the same brain which is capable of evoking life-saving ideas is also capable of excreting ideas that can lead to Armageddon. But then, here again, I take control of my own software and hit the delete key repeatedly, purging more thoughts about what will happen and what will be. There is no point in fantasizing about the future, because as they say, what will be, will be. It is there here and now, which is more significant. I may think differently than what the next person does and he may, in turn, differ from the next. We all have our individualistic way and pattern of thought, exclusively moulded for our exquisite individual pleasure. When couples say that they think alike, or that their thoughts are similar or matching, is it true? Can two people think alike?

I for one do not agree, although opinions may differ. There is a big gap between thinking alike and thinking similar. Thoughts may be similar because after all, we all live in more or less the same environs, but thought processes cannot be exactly alike. Each individual has been bestowed with this unique, supreme gift, if I may be permitted to put it like that.
