Be Prepared for an Emergency
Keep prescriptions and doctor’s contact numbers handy.
- Keep medical records
- Ensure family members or caregivers know the patient’s health conditions
- Keep an emergency kit:
- First-aid materials
- BP monitor
- Thermometer
- Glucometer
- Emergency medicines as advised by your doctor:
- Disprin
- Sorbitrate
- Inhaler (if any)
- Pocket torchlight, mobile phone & mobile charger
- Display EMERGENCY NUMBERS on the door / near phone (landline if any)
Step-by-Step Management During Common Emergencies
Vol 02
❤️ Heart Attack
Symptoms:
Chest pain, heaviness, sweating, breathlessness, pain radiating to jaw or arm.
Immediate Management:
- Make the person sit upright and stay calm.
- Give Aspirin (if not allergic) and/or Sorbitrate (as advised by doctor).
- Loosen tight clothing.
- Call ambulance (108 / 102) immediately.
- Monitor breathing; be ready to start CPR if unresponsive.
🧠 Stroke
Symptoms:
Facial droop, slurred speech, weakness on one side.
Immediate Management:
- Note time of onset of symptoms.
- Keep head slightly elevated; ensure airway is clear.
- Do not give food or water.
- Call for immediate hospital transfer — treatment within 1 hour is critical.
😲 Falls & Fractures
Common in elderly due to weak bones or imbalance.
Immediate Management:
- Do not move if hip or spine injury is suspected.
- If bleeding — apply gentle pressure with sterile cloth.
- Apply ice pack for swelling.
- Support injured limb with splint or towel roll.
- Seek hospital care for X-ray and immobilization.
Breathing Difficulty / COPD / Asthma
Vol 02
Immediate Management:
- Sit upright; ensure an open window for fresh air.
- Loosen tight clothes.
- Use inhaler or nebulizer as prescribed.
- If no relief, call ambulance or shift to hospital.
🍬 Diabetic Emergencies
Low Sugar (Hypoglycemia)
Signs: Sweating, trembling, confusion, fainting.
- Give glucose water, sugar, or sweets immediately.
High Sugar (Hyperglycemia)
Signs: Excess urination, thirst, weakness.
- Check blood sugar, give prescribed insulin, and seek medical care.
😮 Choking
Signs: Difficulty breathing, inability to speak, grasping throat.
Immediate Management:
- Encourage forceful coughing.
- If not relieved, perform Heimlich Maneuver (if trained).
- If unconscious, begin CPR and call emergency services.
